Pilgrimage to Magdalena

Santa Maria de Magdalena in Sonora Mexico

Would you like to learn more about the centuries old, annual cross border pilgrimage to Magdalena, Sonora, in Mexico? The Border Community Alliance (BCA), in conjunction with the University of Arizona Center for Latin American Studies, presents the documentary “Pilgrimage to Magdalena” at the Loft Cinema. The showing is at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 20.

Jerry Haas, a former pastor at St. Paul’s, is now a senior board member of the BCA. It is a nonprofit organization based in Tubac, Arizona, and is dedicated to bridging the border and fostering community through education, collaboration, and cultural exchange.

The Pilgrimage to Magdalena is a cultural phenomenon that takes place every fall as spiritual seekers walk from Nogales or other points of departure to Magdalena, the town in Mexico where Padre Kino died. It’s an amazing story and the documentary tells it well. Jerry was co-producer and was blessed with an incredibly talented team of artists and interpreters. The documentary has received numerous awards.

The screening is free, though a suggested $10 donation will be taken at the door.

Following the showing, there will be a panel discussion with Verlon Jose of the Tohono O’odham Nation, Magda Mankel of the BCA, Tom Sheridan of the University of Arizona’s Southwest Center, and Paul Cicala, KVOA sportscaster.

Masks and proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test are required for theater admission. The Loft Cinema is at 3233 E Speedway Blvd. in Tucson.
