Crafty Christians

Join Susan Van Ert and D’Ann Hunt as we put our hearts and hands together and have some fun exploring different textures, mediums, and techniques through crafts. Crafts will be simple to learn yet will challenge your imagination and creativity.  We’ll begin with the Crafty Christian Prayer, followed by instruction, fellowship and fun for about 2 hours. The cost for each craft (collected at class time) will range from $5 to $12 per craft – just the minimum amount needed to cover materials and supplies. All supplies will be provided. Most crafts are targeted for adults or youth 12 and over because they are too challenging for little kids’ hands. At least one craft is suited for families, but each child younger than 12 must be supervised by an adult, one-on-one. No long term commitment is required.  Come for one craft session or come for them all (separate sign-up required for each date).  Each class is hosted in the A-frame Annex from 6 to 8pm.  CLASSES LIMITED TO 20 CRAFTERS. SIGN-UP REQUIRED prior to deadline for each craft session you want to attend. Call the church office (520-296-6149) or sign up online HERE.

February 21, 2019: Beautiful Gift Bows with guest crafter Donna Bushek for Adults & 12 and Older. Using wire-edge ribbon (of any width) and pipe cleaners, you’ll be able to fashion a bow that looks as professional as a florist. Cost: $5 for 3 Beautiful Bows.

March 21, 2019: Crochet “Jeweled” Necklaces for Adults. You’ve seen these necklaces at cute boutiques for $30 or more, but we’ll make them for a fraction of the cost. We’ll use Trellis (or Ladder) yarn, a large crochet hook, and some simple beads.  You don’t have to know how to crochet. You’ll get to keep the crochet hook so you can make many more on your own. Cost: $5 for hook, yarn, beads and pattern to make one necklace.

April 11, 2019: Paper “Quilted” Ornaments for Adults & 12 and Older. You can make an ornament that looks like a pinecone or an Easter egg.  It just depends on the paper colors you choose.  Cost: $8 for Styrofoam egg, paper, pins and ribbons to make one ornament.

May 16, 2019: Pottery Painting Party for Adults & 12 and Older. Crafters will get to choose green ware to glaze, Susan will fire it, and the finished products will be returned to crafters. Fun and Easy! Cost: $10 for special glaze paints and green ware to make one item.  (Project cost is a little higher because the glaze is expensive.)

June 20, 2019: Sparkling Night Lights and Ornaments for Families: 1-on-1 Parental supervision required for kids under 12. A Starbucks Frappuccino bottle becomes a fun night light that looks like Olaf, and a simple clear ornament bulb becomes the face of Old Grinch.  Fun for the whole family!  Cost: $5 to make one project whether it is Olaf or Grinch ($10 for both).  Olaf Night Light includes: prepared SBUX glass bottle, paints, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, string of lights, batteries, stickers and adornments.  Grinch ornament includes: Clear plastic bulb, paints, patterns, markers and adornments.

July 18, 2019: Christmas in July Quilted Ornaments with guest crafter Karen Gutierrez for Adults. Crafters will love learning how to turn Christmas fabric, a Styrofoam ball, and LOTS of small pins into beautiful ornaments that look like Grandma’s traditional quilting. All supplies provided, but you can bring the fabric of your choice if desired. Cost: $12 for Styrofoam ball, Christmas-theme cotton fabric, pins and ribbons to make one ornament.

August 15, 2019: Locker Hook Mug Mats for Adults & 12 and Older. This is NOT hook latching! Locker hooking requires a special tool which we’ll use along with cotton fabric, tapestry needle, yarn and foundation canvas to learn this technique. Once you complete a mug mat, you’ll want to take on larger projects like placemats or rugs. This project is a little more expensive because of the tool, which crafters get to keep so they can continue locker hooking at home. Cost: $10 for locker hooking tool, tapestry needle, foundation cloth, yarn and cotton fabric.
