Telling the Truth

We start the new year with a special worship series that will integrate Biblical storytelling and teachings, Christian tradition, and socio-political realities. We’re going to risk telling the truth in church; lamenting, protesting, and complaining about what is wrong, yes, but doing so with hope that God has an alternative for us to pursue together. God’s desire is a greater good for us all. Let’s face the falsehoods around us, and seek to hear God’s alternative.

Half Truths Worship Series and Book Study

In the months of October and November we’ll be exploring, both via a worship series and a weeknight book study, Rev. Adam Hamilton’s book “Half-Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn’t Say”. In this series, we’ll reflect on the nature of Scripture and then consider some of the “myths” that people attribute to the Bible.

Growing with Grace

As we grow in grace, we learn to jettison those things that separate us from God and God’s love and pursue those that help that love be made real in our world. In the new year, Rev. Ron Bartlow will lead us through seven key turning points in his faith – sharing stories, experiences, and Biblical lessons that have contributed to his ongoing growth as a disciple of Christ.

Looking Inward, Living Outward (Worship Series)

Based on Daniel Wolpert’s book of the same name, during the month of September our worship series Looking Inward, Living Outward will draw from the wisdom of the sermon on the mount to inspire us to live after Jesus’ example. Each week we will consider practices of faith rooted in Jesus’ teaching, and how those practices lead us to live in such a way that the world around usmight be transformed for the better.

Looking Inward, Living Outward (Prayer Retreat)

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church invites you to a special one day Prayer Retreat with author Daniel Wolpert. Daniel Wolpert, a healer and student of the spiritual life, has worked as a research scientist, psychologist, spiritual director, farmer, teacher, and construction worker. He has spent forty years teaching in the fields of wellness and spiritual formation, and founded the Minnesota Institute for Contemplation and Healing.

On the 10 Commandments

Some weeks I find more in the Scriptural text, or my research thereof, than I can share in a standard sermon, and I have to choose what to include lest I preach longer than our average attention span cares to engage. With that in mind, and with so much good material drawn particularly from the inimitable Walter Brueggemann’s “Exodus” portion of The New Interpreter’s Bible Volume 1, I thought I’d share more here on our blog. Blessings to you who choose to visit and read!
