We’ll begin 2024 with a sermon series looking back upon some of the most impactful, “best” things of 2023! Join us as we consider:
Sunday, January 7: The Word(s) of the Year
Merriam Webster chose “authentic” as its word of the year, sharing the importance that modern generations place on being real. This speaks volumes about our quest for truth in an age of algorithms and online artifice! And add to that Oxford’s endorsement of “rizz” as its word of the year, and we get a sense that people are tuned in to and care about how we come across.
Sunday, January 14: Movie of the Year
With wit, humor, and pathos, Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film Barbie not only makes Barbie care about more than the material belongings of her Dream House, but also challenges the imbalance of power in our world. Like the prophet Nathan standing up to King David, Gerwig has used story-telling to challenge what is unjust while inspiring people to care.
Sunday, January 21: Person of the Year
The author’s of TIME Magazine’s article about this year’s person of the year assert that it is very unlikely you made it through 2023 without having some awareness of Taylor Swift. From the pageantry and experience of the Eras Tour to the generosity she shared with her staff, we’ll consider Taylor and how she might be demonstrating what it means to be authentic as our whole selves.
Sunday, January 28: Character of the Year
Rev. Ron’s choice for Character of the Year goes to Jason Sudekis’ portrayal of Ted Lasso, who demonstrates that true strength can be found despite weakness and is demonstrated through compassion and forgiveness. Jesus’ teachings may be challenged by some today for being “woke” or “weak,” but as his followers, we believe that his teachings, and his example of compassion and forgiveness, are still the better way.
